Green Island Main beach is reknowned for lots and lots of seaweed. When seaweed piles up on a beach it starts to rot. This process of decomposition is completely natural and an important part of the coastal ecosystem. It's also completely smelly and putrid when you have to wade through rotting kelp for microplastics like we had to today!
As well as the thousands of broken bits of plastic we found some carpet and a 6 meter length of ploy pipe. Around further at Dennis Gulch, among the rounded quartzite cobbles we also found fishing buoys and a tractor tyre.
In total we cleaned up around 26 000 bits of rubbish!
